You might have a huge ego if…

Bum, bum, bum, bum, duh, dum…As I was running on the treadmill today Beyonce’s ‘Ego’ started playing on my iPod.  (I always turn it on shuffle so I can be surprised) Then, in the middle of the song coincidentally ESPN showed this video of the Miami Heat introducing their new dynasty-bound line-up and it made me want to puke. I know I’m a little late commenting on this, but all I have to say is, you might have a gigantic ego if you’re a 25 year old free agent who staged a press conference to announce your decision on which basketball team you’re going to play for all because you haven’t yet won a championship yet. Wow, ho-ly fricken ego.

There are so many athletes out there who haven’t won championships, CuJo, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Pat LaFontaine, Dan Fouts, Barry Bonds, Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Warren Moon, Barry Sanders, Ken Griffey, Jr., Patrick Ewing, Tony Gwynn, Marcel Dionne, Karl Malone, Ted William, Elgin Baylor, Ty Cobb and Dan Marino … and they all played a whole lot longer trying to win their coveted championship without making such an embarrassing public display of I LOVE MYSELF MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE syndrome.

Free agent or not if you decide to play for another team why not just discuss your decision with your agent, sign your deal and let the team make the announcement at a normal press conference.  What’s the need for a prime time press conference where you just ramble on and on about how difficult your decision was to make and then spit in the face of the team that brought you into the league (out of high school.) Sure you would’ve been signed by another team if Cleveland didn’t sign you, but I’ve got news for you LeBron, it doesn’t matter if you’re a two-time MVP or former Rookie of the Year your reputation is still in the tubes.  Don’t you think every other player in the NBA and every other sports team wants to win championships?  Have you ever come across a professional athlete who said, “Nah, I just play for a pay check, don’t really care about winning a championship.”  It’s probably safe to say, no.

So, now what “King James?”  What if you still don’t win?  What kind of message does this send to the other players and the fans who watch you?  How about the kids who look up to you?

What do YOU (reader of my blog) think?  Any possible way this could be a good thing for LeBron’s image?

Seems to me, the Miami Heat just should have asked Beyonce to perform with their new dynasty on stage that day. It would probably have looked something like these two videos mixed together.

Stay tuned 🙂
